Belarusian & Vegan: Draniki

When I asked my Belarusian and vegan couchsurfer Tanya what she would recommend as the typical dish from Belarus she didn´t need to think very long before she told me about – Draniki.

Draniki are potato pancakes that are served hot with cold sour cream, garlic sauce or just on their own. They originated in Russia some 200 years ago. It is also said the dish was a kind of imitation of a German course! So I felt pretty home when I finally ate them! 😉

Tanya told me that she makes Draniki all the time because they are simple and still very popular in present day Belarus. And indeed they are pretty easy to make.

Vegan Draniki

  • 6 big potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • flour
  • salt & pepper
  • sunflower oil
Chop or grate the onion. Grate the peeled potatoes. Mix together onion and grated potatoes. Add 1 tablespoon oil.

Add some flour – just a bit to combine everything. Season with salt & pepper.

Heat oil in a frying pan. Put one or two full tablespoon(s) of the potato mixture in the pan and form a small pancake. Repeat until the pan is full. Cook for 2-3 minutes and then flip over. Repeat this until all mixture is gone.

As Tanya and I completely forgot about things we could eat with the Draniki I made a quick vegan herbal butter which turned out pretty good.

Combine soft vegan butter with chopped garlic and (a lot) herbals of your choice. Season with salt and pepper. That´s it!

Enjoy the Draniki together with the herbal butter!
